An antiquated notion continues to play a part in divorce

Even though work may still need to be done, women have made great strides in the workforce in recent decades. More career-minded women become a success, and their income reflects it. Sadly, equal pay is not the only glass ceiling a Massachusetts woman may hit. She may also put her marriage in jeopardy and risk divorce by making more money than her husband makes.

Of course, this does not mean that she should give up her career or back down in any way. It is simply a fact that, when a wife makes more money than her husband does, the risk of divorce rises an astonishing 33%. Why does this happen? It happens because of the antiquated notion that men ought to be the primary breadwinners in the marriage.

Not every man has a problem with his wife making more money than he does, but it seems that a large percentage of husbands do. That is not to say that every marriage in which this is an issue will end, but for those that do, it is often because the husband feels as though he is shirking his "husbandly duty" by not making the higher income for the household. Then there is the fact that some women hold it over their husbands' heads for one reason or another, which makes it impossible to continue the marital relationship.

Without a doubt, financial issues continue to factor into many divorce proceedings. However, in a time when gender roles are not supposed to exist anymore, the issue of who makes more money should not be one of them. Regardless, when a Massachusetts couple ends their marriage -- for whatever reason -- more women seem to be paying alimony than ever before.
